It is said that Overlord Whip Dance is passed down by Xiang Yu, Overlord of Western Chu, who whipped for impromptu dancing after drinking. Overlord Whip Dance has been spread nationwide with different titles in different places, and the dance styles also have local characteristics in different regions.

When performing Overlord Whip Dance, Sani people in Shilin dance with Sani music or percussion music. The Overlord Whip used in Shilin area is to insert an old copper coin into a wooden clip of about one meter. The dance is often accompanied with gong and drum. Dancers hold Overlord Whip in one hand and rub the copper coin with the other hand, dancing rhythmically with the music and patting on shoulders, arms, feet, and the ground with complex, beautiful, and lively movements.
