Lunar June: Torch Festival

Torch Festival originates from folklore with the main activities including calling the soul, ignition, and wrestling.

Calling the soul: Yi people think that each person has three souls that are attached to the body and when not dead. After death, a soul guards on the ancestral stage, a soul guards besides the grave, and a soul is free. During celebration on June 24th of the lunar calendar, families get together and must call back the souls that guard the graves and flow outside.

Ignition: fire has a bright and auspicious meaning Yi people ignite the torch for removing evil and avoiding disasters. Giving light to rooms, stables, and field on the 24th will help remove evil and enjoy fortune. Young people igniting torches besides the village, singing and dancing round the fire means mutual blessings and unity.

Wrestling: there is always a lawn for people to play beside a Yi village. During the festival, local young people in the village and outside visitors gather on the lawn to wrestle. The winner will enjoy great award and become the hero for all.
